ren.ai is an interactive AI storytelling app. This Privacy Policy explains how information is collected, used, shared, retained, and protected when you use the app.
The app is provided by Ekaterina Mamontova (the "Developer," "we," "us," or "our").
This policy is a notice about our practices. It does not replace separate consent where consent is required.
Age Requirement
The app is for people aged 18 or older. We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18; if we learn that an underage person is using it, we may delete their information or restrict access. We may use age signals from distribution platforms to confirm eligibility.
Information We Collect
We may collect information you provide directly, including:
- account information, such as email address, login identifiers, and authentication details from Apple or Google sign-in;
- profile, preferences, content settings, and language settings;
- characters, images, relationship and story settings, prompts, messages, generated replies and images, and conversation history;
- purchase, subscription, entitlement, credit allowance, and transaction status;
- support requests, reports, feedback, and related communications, including the email address you give us on the contact form.
We may also collect information automatically, including:
- device type, operating system, app version, language, region, and identifiers;
- the advertising identifier, and ad-attribution signals such as SKAdNetwork data, where advertising applies to you;
- push notification tokens, if you allow notifications;
- usage events, session information, timestamps, logs, diagnostics, crash reports, and performance data;
- ad views and rewarded-ad completion records reported by the app and ad SDK;
- network, security, fraud-prevention, abuse, and rate-limit information.
Some information is also stored locally on your device — including a local copy of your stories and conversations — so the app works quickly and offline. Deleting the app removes that local copy.
AI Processing
Generating content. We send prompts, character settings, images, story content, and relevant chat history to AI providers to generate replies and images, summarize conversations, and preserve story context. The providers are listed below. This content can contain personal information even when direct account identifiers are omitted.
Quality and safety review. We may review conversations and generated content to investigate reports, debug problems, evaluate response quality, and improve prompts and safety systems. Where practical, we remove or reduce direct identifiers before these uses; that does not necessarily anonymize the content.
Model training. We do not currently use private conversations to train or fine-tune our own AI models. If we introduce this use, we will update this policy, explain the proposed use, and obtain separate opt-in consent before using your private conversations for that purpose. Providers' retention and any use of inputs or outputs for their own model improvements depend on the provider, the service used, and the applicable terms and settings.
Sharing personal information with third-party AI requires your explicit permission; acknowledging this policy alone does not provide it.
Avoid submitting sensitive personal information such as health details, government identifiers, financial information, precise location, passwords, or another person's information without permission. Information you include may be processed with the rest of your content.
How We Use Information
We use information to:
- provide and personalize the app, including AI replies, images, and story continuity;
- manage accounts, purchases, subscriptions, credit allowances, and entitlements;
- serve and measure advertising, grant rewarded-ad benefits, and prevent reward abuse;
- provide customer support and respond to reports or requests;
- detect and address abuse, fraud, policy violations, illegal content, and security or safety risks, including surfacing crisis resources for suicide or self-harm content;
- debug, measure, and improve performance, response quality, safety systems, and product features;
- communicate service updates, policy changes, security notices, and support messages;
- comply with legal obligations and enforce our Terms.
Legal Bases (EEA and UK)
If you are in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, we rely on the following legal bases:
- Performance of a contract — creating and maintaining your account, generating replies and images, preserving story continuity, and managing purchases, subscriptions, and credits.
- Legitimate interests — securing the service, preventing fraud and abuse, moderating content, debugging, measuring and improving the app and our AI systems, and responding to your enquiries. We balance these interests against your rights.
- Consent — where required for processing, including tracking for personalized advertising. Device permissions separately control notifications, tracking, and photo access. Withdrawal does not affect the lawfulness of earlier processing based on consent.
- Legal obligation — meeting our obligations under applicable law and responding to lawful requests.
Advertising
Google AdMob and its ad partners serve ads unless you have an active subscription or ad-free day pass.
On iOS, the app asks for your permission before tracking you across apps and websites. If you do not give permission, you will still see ads, but they will not be personalized using your advertising identifier. You can change this at any time in your device's privacy settings, and you can also limit ad personalization in your Google Ads settings.
You may choose to watch rewarded ads for additional chat messages. We record completion events reported by the app and ad SDK to grant rewards and prevent abuse.
We do not sell personal information for money. Depending on your tracking permission and where you live, serving personalized ads may be treated as "sharing" for cross-context behavioral advertising under laws such as the California Consumer Privacy Act. Declining the tracking prompt, or turning tracking off in your device settings, opts you out of that sharing.
We never use the content of your conversations, characters, or stories to target advertising.
Human Review and Moderation
Private conversations are not public, but authorized personnel may review them for support, moderation, debugging, quality and safety review, or legal compliance. Automated tools also classify content and detect policy violations and abuse. The app is not monitored in real time by a human.
Content You Publish
When you create a story, you choose whether it is private or public. A public story is reviewed and, if approved, appears in discovery, where other users can see it and start their own sessions with it. What becomes visible is the story itself — its title, description, tags, characters, and images.
Your account information, email address, purchase history, personal settings, and your own conversations are not shown to other users. Today, no user identity is displayed alongside a published story. If we later attach a public handle or display name to published stories, we will make that clear in the app before doing so.
Information Sharing
We share information with providers for the purposes below. Service providers receiving personal information must provide protection at least equivalent to this policy and applicable App Store requirements. Providers may also process information under their own policies when acting independently, such as for your App Store account.
- Apple for App Store distribution, Apple ID payments, purchase management, refunds, and Apple sign-in.
- Firebase and Google services for authentication, analytics, crash reporting, performance monitoring, remote configuration, app integrity checks, Google sign-in, and server operations, including Google AdMob for advertising.
- RevenueCat for purchase and subscription entitlement management.
- Expo for app updates and push notification delivery.
- Sentry for error monitoring and diagnostics.
- AI and image-generation providers, including OpenAI, Google AI, xAI, OpenRouter, and Runware, to process prompts, context, images, and generated outputs on our behalf.
- Cloudflare R2 or compatible storage infrastructure for file storage and delivery.
Apple handles App Store payments; we receive purchase and entitlement information to provide paid features. We may also disclose information to authorities or other parties when legally required or necessary to protect rights and safety, or to parties involved in a merger, financing, reorganization, or sale of the business.
Data Retention and Deletion
We retain information as needed to provide the service, maintain story history, manage purchases, provide support, address safety and abuse, meet legal obligations, and resolve disputes.
You can initiate account deletion using Delete Account in the app's account settings. Access is disabled first, and associated data is retained for a 90-day restoration period. After that period, accounts are processed for permanent deletion or anonymization. Active subscriptions or other paid benefits delay that processing until they end. Legal obligations, security needs, disputes, or investigations may also require longer retention of relevant information.
Deleting your account does not cancel an App Store subscription. Manage cancellation in your App Store account settings. For questions about deletion timing or a request under applicable privacy law, contact us using the details below.
Backups and logs may persist for a limited period before deletion. Some information may be retained in de-identified, aggregated, or anonymized form.
Your Choices and Rights
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, export, restrict, or object to certain processing of your personal information, and to withdraw consent you have given.
Manage account information and initiate account deletion in the app. Device settings control tracking, notifications, and photo permissions. For other privacy requests, including consent withdrawal, email [email protected] or use our contact page. We may verify your identity and will not discriminate against you for exercising your rights.
If you are in the EEA or the UK, you also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.
International Processing
We are based in Japan, and the app and its service providers process information in Japan, the United States, and other countries where those providers operate. Data protection laws in those countries may differ from the laws where you live.
Where we transfer personal information out of the EEA or the UK, we rely on appropriate safeguards, such as the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses and the UK International Data Transfer Addendum, or on transfers to countries recognized as providing an adequate level of protection. You can request details of the safeguards we use by contacting us.
Security
We use commercially reasonable safeguards to protect information, including encryption in transit, restricted administrative access, app integrity checks, and rate limiting. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
Changes to This Privacy Policy
We post updates on this page and notify you of material changes through the app or another appropriate channel. Where a change requires consent, we will request it separately before carrying out the affected processing.
Contact
